Are you trying to conceive?  Recent study from the National health Institute and Ohio state University USA shows that a woman is more likely to have a miscarriage if she and her partner drank two or more caffeinated beverages just before conception.

The study also shows that women who drank on a daily basis, more than two caffeinated beverages per day during the first seven weeks of pregnancy are more likely to get miscarriages.

The impact of caffeine on pregnancy has been suspected for some time. Results from this study provides useful information for couples who are planning a pregnancy and would like to minimize the risks of miscarriage.

Researchers compared lifestyle factors such as cigarette use, caffeine beverage consumption and multivitamin use among 344 couples with a singleton pregnancy from the weeks before conception all through to the seventh week of pregnancy.

Of the 344 pregnancies, 98 (about 28%) ended in miscarriages. For the risk of miscarriage occurring due to caffeine intake during preconception period, miscarriages was associated with females aged 35 years and above with a hazard ratio of 1.96 ( almost twice the miscarriage risk of younger women).

While the study shows a strong link between caffeine consumption and miscarriages, it does not fully explain why. Possible explanations as enumerated upon by Joseph B. Stanford, M.D University of Utah Healthcare include:

  • Caffeine might affect blood flow to the developing embryo in the uterus or even have a direct effect on the embryo itself
  • Prior to conception it could impact the final stages of ovum or sperm development.
An interesting result seen in the study showed that while caffeine consumption increased the risk of miscarriages, intake of multivitamin just before and during pregnancy reduced the risk of miscarriages. This is attributed to the increased folic acid present in multivitamin preparations.

At the end of the day, results from this study points out that when trying to conceive at any age it is important to consider lifestyle habits and strive to be as healthy as possible just before and during pregnancy.
